We installed a new Magnaflow muffler onto the stock piping
of a V-6. Since on a California car there are two pre catalytic
converters and a third main cat also, noise is not much of a concern.
The stock system also has a resonator (additional silencer) in it.
Welding hangars onto the muffler and prepping for
installation.
This muffler is the Street Series Magnaflow with 2
1/4" piping with a 2" pipe inside the muffler to reduce the
sound some. Magnaflow also has a Race Series 2 1/4" version that is
straight through. A little louder and a little more flow.
The Magnaflow universal mufflers need to be professionally
installed. Hangars needed to be welded on and a piece of a 45 degree
bend needed to be added to match up to the factory piping.
Stock Muffler
Stock muffler shown cut open.
All the air must pass through the small perforated holes
in the short pipe in the first chamber. The second larger chamber is
more of an echo or Resonance chamber for sound reflection. The exhaust
then flows out the pipe to the tip with its own little muffler built
into it.
Stock Catalytic Converter
All the piping on a stock exhaust system is actually a
decent size. Except.....except right at the cat. Just before and just
after it necks down from 60mm to 50mm. The front part is welded to the
Y-pipe . The rear neck down section is part of the muffler piping.
This kills any chance of making a easy installing, bolt in
high flow cat. A cat with larger piping could be installed if it was
welded into place, but it will be difficult to find a muffler shop
willing to do it. Legally, cats may only be replaced if the one on the
car is no longer functioning properly.
California Cats
Here you can see the additional pre cats
that the 2000 California cars and all 2001-2002 cars come with.
Any company making headers will have to deal with or ignore the
differences between the Federal and the California cars.
This is the rear cat on a V-6 car. Note the tight space
there would be (if any) for a turbo on the rear bank of cylinders. There
is no way (financially ) I couldn't see a turbo kit for the V6 ever
being California smog legal.
That is the axle at the bottom of the pic, the alternator at the
right and the steering rack at the top.
