After our second place finish in the LA Street
Race, we headed off to Baja California, Mexico to race in their border
series. The races are in Tijuana, Ensenada, Tecate and San Felipe. All
the races are in the down town streets with lots of spectators. The
streets can be a little rough but they weren't all that much worse than
the down town LA streets. Ensenada is a beach resort city about 60
miles south of the border at San Diego. The race was on a 1.4 mile
circuit the main street right along the bay.
Practice
We had a few problems with the alternator and
the brakes were a little inconsistent. We found a caliper pin that
wasn't sliding properly, fixed it up and installed some new pads. 2
little screws came loose inside the alternator. The only way to dig them
out and start them again was to do it upside down.
Qualifying
We qualified fastest in Group A on Saturday. The car draws a
big crowd every time we come in off the track.
The RX-7 in the background belongs to Doug Robinson, one of
our 323 GTX Rally guys. Tony Chavez (GVR-4 Rally car) was driving it in
Group C and finished 3rd.
Race Day
Passing the Ferratsun
Picking on a Porsche
We ended up finishing first in Group A. We
lapped the entire field once and everyone but 2nd (300ZX) and 3rd place (Moosestang)
we lapped twice. Ouch. The locals we kind of expect to do good
against but the gringos that showed up couldn't hang with us either.
The Crew
Left to right: Alex, Culver, Jack, Ty, Rob, Mike, and Eric.
Next race in the border series is in Tecate.
The other cars:
Finishing 2nd in Group A was Jorge Suoto in the ex Roger Mears
300ZX twin turbo. 3rd was "El Coyote" in the Mustang.
We were running the same lap times as the Unlimited
class cars in qualifying, but when race time came our race lap times
were 2 seconds faster than them. The only guy close was a 911/930
something from the Porsche Owners Club. He qualified 1/2 second faster
but choked in the race.
These were couple of the quicker Rabbits. If you have a VW
you need a big wing in Mexico I guess. The local boys do
have some really fast Golfs and Rabbits. Out of a squadron of about 20
of them, there was one with a turbo, one with a supercharger and another
non turbo that helped keep us on our toes. They really do a lot with
limited resources. The honda thing is just starting to catch on there
but the VWs are killing the hondas big time.
Traffic jam in the turn 6 hair pin.
This supercharged CRX went pretty quick till it ate it's CV joints in
the hair pin turn.
A wedding party nervously crosses a brake run off area in a practice
session. They dont seem to have enough lawyers in Mexico. If you want to
get run over by a race car there is no one to stop you.
