Got Spoolup?

I cant say that I have ever seen this kind of spoolup with this kind of top end potential. This is a track car with a Buschur Racing  2.3 liter @ 10:1 compression. The turbo is the new Borg Warner on a Full Race manifold with dual Tial wastegates. AEM EMS and E-85 on 1600cc RC Engineering injectors tuned by Scot Gray here.

Running the car at different boost levels. Robert Fuller (RobiSpec) does the track prep and coaching on this EVO 8 and was  was looking for something in the 500 whp range to keep the car somewhat driveable on a road course for his customer.  Scot could not get the car to run below 18 psi so 524 is the lowest hp there can be.

New Motor Time

At the last Redlint Time Attack we finally killed one of the first 2.4 EVO motors in the US. This was the third 2.4 EVO motor we built back in 2004 for our shop EVO 8.  I dont like the smaller available sealing surface available on a 2.4 block that has been bored .020″ oversized, the head gasket (along with the assistance of 520 ft lbs of torque) is what finally let go on the motor.

So we reused the Mitsubishi 2.4 crank and took the opportunity of it being all apart to switch back to a 2.0 block for a 2.3 stroker motor. Wiseco pistons, Manley rods, new bearings and a general freshen up. We’ll be hanging the motor in the car this week.

Labor Day – Closed for the Day

It is Labor day and we are CLOSED today! We are taking this opportunity for a day off after a year of events, racing and working on cars to pretty much do a bunch of nothing. Well “nothing” for me means lots of neglected “Honey Do” stuff around the house this weekend. But you get the idea :-) We’ll be back in the shop normal hours Tuesday.

I would like to thanks the RRE employees for all the hard work and long hours doing their best to make happy EVO and Eclipse owners out of our customers. Also a big thanks out to our extended family of volunteers and conscripts that come out to races and events to pitch in with greatly appreciated help!

AEM Meth/Water Injection Flow Gauge Testing

Michael Ferrara and Stephan Papadakis were here at the shop today shooting some video for DSport while we were testing The Boz’s meth fail safe setup. You might remember Keith from a couple dyno shootouts with his white 700whp GVR4 last year. The GVR4 was getting a bit scetchy with that kind of whp and he went to the dark side and picked up a clean used EVO 8.

The Boz had just installed the AEM meth/water injection kit along with the AEM flow gauge and so it was a good car to do some fail safe testing on. The car has an EVO 9 turbo and stock cams. Boz had an AEM EMS on his GVR4 so he went with it again on the EVO.

We tested the fail safe with an overflow condition (simulating a hole in a hose), underflow (clogged nozzle) and also with no power to the pump. Look for the article and video from DSport Magazine in a month or two.

License Plate of the Week

Corey Jenson’s ’97 AWD  Eclipse converted from a GS-T. He hangs with LA DSM – San Diego, CA

And runs on E-85!

RalliArt Turbo Size?

We all know that the 2009+ Lancer RalliArt comes with a turbo that is smaller than the EVO X turbo. Exactly how small is it?

Compressor wheel:

Standard tiny Dixie cup:

Tiny Dixie cup installed in the compressor inlet:

Turbine wheel:

Monster wide mouth cap:

Monster cap in the turbine housing.

The turbo is that small :-P Still… this little turbo can go from a stock 210 whp up to 270 whp with less than $1500 in mods and tuning.

AEM Drop-in panel filter $45

Used EVO X FMIC $200-$300 (depending on condition)

Used EVO 9/X BOV $100 (New $180)

Install EVO X FMIC $200

Modified Stock Muffler $140
-or-
RRE Stealthy Axle Back muffler $350 installed.
-or-
Full Magnaflow Cat Back $550 parts and labor.

Dyno Tune $400

Depending on what you pay for the used parts and their condition, depending on how cute you get with the muffler, what installs you do yourself… the price can drop quite a bit!

ED NAZARIAN

Ed is a good guy.  I have gotten to spend some time with him over the last few months for NASA.  He is the perfect garage mate.  He doesn’t talk to you too much and takes care of business.  He also has the coolest dad ever.  The last time I ran NASA was in June.  Ed wasn’t driving but he came out anyways and did a ride along in my EVO.  Then, he drove my EVO, which scared the crap out of me.  There is nothing like having a real race car driver drive your daily driver around the track in anger to freak you out and show you how slow you are.  I thought I was kicking some imaginary ass in HPDE but ED is really the one killing it!!  I can’t wait to have more good times with Ed out on the track this year in NASA.  You should come out too!! JOON coverage on SPEEDHUNTERS

It is too bad to hear that Joon crashed his RX-8 in the early stages of FD Vegas due to some rain.

I am glad that Joon is OK though!!

Tuning Tuesdays

I hung out with Mike and Scot the other night to take some video of them tuning.

Here is a rough cut of the footage with some music.
